Winter 2016

We may well have reached the middle of the year and the weather has definitely dropped a few degrees but that is not stopping candidates on their hunt for the perfect job. The market is booming at the moment with high calibre, professional candidates coming through our doors, great job opportunities available and we are having to move fast to keep up with it all.

You may have read in the Herald recently about work gender equity and how there are so few women at the top. Studies found that a female CEO in an organisational setting who talked for much longer or much less than others was regarded as less competent and less suitable than a male CEO who talked for the same amount of time. It is said that it is particularly hard for women to get to the top as it is hard to get the right commercial experience. Emma Watson launched her “HeForShe” campaign at the UN in September 2014 and since then has sparked a global conversation on gender roles. One of the issues included closing the pay gap – and this is now becoming an important topic with regards to gender equity.

Numerous surveys have been conducted and have all concluded that the pay gap starts as a child with pocket money. Studies show that on average a boy will get 12% more pocket money than a girl! With some of the findings stating that this is preparing them for pay inequity when they grow up. To read more about this visit the Herald website.

World Business Forum

At the end of May, Director, Kate Ross attended the World Business Forum in Sydney. She joined over two thousand business leaders from around the world where they learnt from and were inspired by some of the worlds top business figures. The World Business Forum stimulated new thinking and was focused on issues that are most relevant to today’s business people, motivating action and change.

Chris Gardner was one of the speakers, the individual who the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness” was based upon featuring Will Smith. He spoke about perseverance and inspiring others to reach their full potential, how to channel success through perseverance and addressing current social injustices. Another speaker who was excellent to listen to was Tamara Erickson, she broke down the different generations, how they think and what motivates them. Tamara also covered off creating a culture that fosters and engages in talented individuals for the ages, managing tomorrows employee, generational differences in the workplace and leading tomorrows people. This was one of the best sessions of the conference. The last speaker of the conference was Sir Richard Branson, he spoke about building an iconic brand, overcoming the many inevitable failures and keys to effectively leading a large and diverse company. Kate felt that she didn’t learn much from Sir Richard, but his stories along the way were very funny and kept the audience amused.

These conferences inspire new ideas and give you time as a business owner to sit back and see if we can do things differently, better and these days faster.
